When "words" (items from the lexicon of a language)
are combined to form meaningful utterances or sentences, there
is nearly always a certain amount of regularity involved. Some
languages have a fairly "free" word order, whereas in
others the rules for word order may be fixed to a very large extent.
Even in languages with so-called "free" word order there
are always limitations to the amount of freedom that can be applied
to the order of words in a meaningful sentence. The restrictions
that exist reflect to a large extent the structural characteristics
of the sentences.
