Morphology

Morphology as a term in linguistics refers to the way one item in the lexicon of a language can be systematically manifested phonologically in more than one way, where there is a difference of meaning attached to these different manifestations.

In European languages morphology uses mainly segmental means, but in many languages in other continents prosody can play an important role. In some European languages, for instance Finnish and Estonian, quantity (which is a major prosodic parameter) plays an important role.
